Our Philanthropic Projects

Assistance League of San Bernardino supports two philanthropic projects for the children of our community: the Dr. Earl R. Crane Children's Dental Center and Operation School Bell®.

The children of San Bernardino served by the Dental Center and Operation School Bell are from families of every ethnic, religious and racial background who do not qualify for welfare or MediCal, but who cannot afford to pay a dentist or buy new clothes. They are identified by San Bernardino City Schools personnel.

 

Dr. Earl R. Crane, Children's Dental Health

Established in 1949, the Dr. Earl R. Crane Children's Dental Health Center provides complete professional dental services to select children in San Bernardino.

These services include:

• General dentistry provided by a full time dentist and dental assistant
• Dental screenings in San Bernardino elementary schools
• Oral hygiene instruction for all dental patients
• Special dental procedures, including minor oral surgery and prosthetics
• Orthodontia

The Dental Health Center serves approximately 1,500 patients a year at the Center and screens over 3,000 students in the schools.

Administration of the Dental Health Center is provided by a board of directors comprised of members of Assistance League, community dentists, San Bernardino city schools representatives, a PTA representative and an attorney from the community.

Operation School Bell

Operation School Bell, adopted in 1983, provides new clothing, shoes and personal hygiene products to children in need.

The simple act of providing underwear, pants, shirt, socks, jacket and shoes to a child has strengthened self-esteem, promoted school attendance and inspired scholastic achievement in children who have participated in Operation School Bell. Often, this is the first set of new clothes a child has ever had. Plus, they get the opportunity to choose their own clothes with the help of an Assistance League member. In addition, they are given a new toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, comb and shampoo.

Operation School Bell serves approximately 200 children each year.

 

How You Can Help

Individuals can contribute to the children of San Bernardino in a number of ways.

• $ 65 will provide a dental check-up for one child
• $ 75 will clothe a child from head to toe
• $150 will cover x-rays and fillings for one child
• $500 will cover the deposit for orthodontia work for one child
• Make a contribution in memory or in honor of a loved one or in celebration of a special occasion.
• Become a member!

Agencies and businesses can contribute to the children of San Bernardino by:

• Donating in-kind services (printing, house maintenance services, etc.)
• Donating services or products for special events (appliances, party supplies, food, flowers, etc.)
• Providing grants
• Making a contribution to honor an employee
